About Lebanon
The Country
Located at a meeting point between three continents, Lebanon has been the crossroads of many civilizations whose traces may be still seen today.
It is a country where the mountain meets
the sea, a country where the mysterious fascination of history and the richness
of civilizations come to life. Walk amongst the spectacular living heritage of a
land with over 4000 years of history. The temples of Baalbeck and Anjar, the
ancient cities ports of Tyre, Sidon and Byblos are just a sample of what Lebanon
can offer to travelers.
Wherever you lay your eyes you will see the ancient and the modern unravel in a
panorama of contrast and wonders. Lebanon has always been a special country.
Its natural beauties and the spirit of its people give it a place in the heart
for all that has been there.
Physical Geography
Situated at the eastern end of the Mediterranean, the Republic of Lebanon occupies a land 210 Km long and 50 Km wide; covering an area of 10,452 square kilometers. Syria bound the country on the East and North and Israel on the South. It is not a large country but within its small area there is considerable topographical diversities.
Climate
A country of all seasons; Lebanon enjoys an essentially Mediterranean climate with mild rainy winters and long warm summers. The temperature varies on average between 26 degrees Celsius in summer and 19 degrees Celsius in winter. In winter, you can ski and swim the same day. In summer, you can escape from the hot and humid weather of the coast by going to the mountains.
Demography
Lebanon's total population is about 3
million, one third of which live in Beirut, the capital city.
The Lebanese people are a mixture of races, ethnic and religious affiliations.
The main towns are Beirut (Capital); Tripoli (North); Saida and Tyre (South);
Baalbeck (Bekaa); Jounieh and Baabda (Mount Lebanon).
Historical Overview
Situated at a geographical crossroad where
East meets West and the land coincides with the sea. Lebanon has witnessed more
than its fair share of invaders who left remarkable prints in its history and
rich archeology.
"Lubnan" the Phoenicia of the 6th century BC succumbed to the domination of the
Chaldeans and then to the Persians. Next came the Greeks under Alexander the
Great followed by seven centuries of
Roman and Byzantine rule (64 BC),
Arabs(643-1095 AD), Crusaders, Mameluks and Ottomans in 1516.
But the conquest was never final, during the 17th-18th centuries two prominent
families the Maans and later the Chehabs fought to protect and extend the
Lebanon's mountain freedom.
After the death of great Bechir II, in 1840, the Ottomans pursued a policy of
direct rule over the mountain, resulting in the civil war of the 1860's. This
prompted several European powers to intervene, to guarantee the autonomy of
Mount Lebanon and keep it under their protection until 1914.
Following World War One, the League of Nations assigned
France as the mandate power. In 1926, Lebanon became a republic and finally
achieved independence from France in 1943.
Religions
A multi-confessional state, Lebanon has no official religion, Christians and Moslems represent the two main faiths each one divided into different religious communities. Other minorities and cultures practice their religions freely.
Languages
The mother tongue is Arabic but nevertheless French and English are widely spoken by the majority of the people. Newspapers, informative publications and all kind of assistance are available in all three languages: communication is therefore definitely not a problem !
